This depends on you as an individual and what your personal goals are. I'll give you a quick breakdown of the two. Machines are solid, easy to chose the weight, and are designed to provide a smooth motion with the weights. This is great for beginners who have never lifted weights before, people who are short on time, or don't have time to think and worry about putting weights away. Also machines can be beneficial for body builders who are purely trying to isolate their muscles for hypertrophy. Free weights are great because you do not have that smooth motion from the machines provided. You are required to balance and stabilize more which is perfect because you get more muscles involved to perform the exercise.
